Accessing the Cottage
Due to the rural location, public transportation options are limited. The nearest bus stop is seven miles away, and local services are infrequent, so having a car is strongly recommended. There is a dedicated flat parking space next to the cottage. The cottage has its own electric vehicle charger for guests’ use (7 kW, AC, with tethered type 2 (Mennekes) connection – suitable for overnight charging). A car not only ensures easier access to the cottage but also allows you to explore the island’s more remote and beautiful attractions, from the Cuillin mountains to the Fairy Pools and beyond.

By Car via the Isle of Skye Bridge
One of the most straightforward routes is via the Skye Bridge, connecting the mainland to the island from the village of Kyle of Lochalsh. This bridge allows year-round access by car, making it an ideal choice if you’re planning to drive directly to the cottage. From Kyle of Lochalsh, it’s approximately an hour’s scenic drive – 23M – to Tokavaig, with stunning views of Highland landscapes along the way.
By Ferry from Mallaig to Armadale
For those looking for a scenic alternative, the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry service from Mallaig to Armadale provides a unique journey across the Sound of Sleat. This route is especially appealing for visitors arriving from the Fort William area, as it’s a short drive to Mallaig. Ferries operate throughout the year, although schedules may vary in winter months. Once you arrive in Armadale, it’s just a 25-minute – 9.2M – drive to Tokavaig.
Glenelg to Kylerhea Community-Run Ferry
If you’re visiting between Easter and October, consider taking the charming community-operated ferry from Glenelg to Kylerhea. This small, historic ferry accommodates up to four cars and operates with a manual turntable. It’s a unique experience, and you’ll have the chance to enjoy some of Skye’s most unspoiled landscapes. From Kylerhea to the main road there is a 6.5M single track road, This is a scenic drive across the island to reach Tokavaig, making this route perfect for those seeking an adventure-rich start to their Skye journey.

The nearest grocery store is eight miles away in Armadale, so you may wish to arrive with provisions for the first day or two. You can also stock up at the Co-op and local shops in Mallaig (if coming by ferry), the Co-ops in Kyle of Lochalsh and Broadford, or the award winning, community-run Armadale Stores by the petrol station near the pier. In Broadford, you’ll also find various shops and eateries, including cafes, bakeries, and pubs offering traditional Scottish cuisine. Broadford is also home to a pharmacy and a small hospital, providing additional peace of mind for visitors requiring medical assistance.
